Down-Up is a piece about how ideas spread and change around the world. Examining the past and present of Yo-Yos and those who are obsessed by them.

DownUp_Set From the Filipino emigrant who made his fortune from Yo-Yos in the 1930s, through to the professional demonstrators who toured UK towns in the 1950s, and how technological advances have changed a children’s toy into a passion for 1000s of obsessive adults across the globe today. Down-Up features stories of competition, innovation and secrecy. Arron first picked up a Yo-Yo in the craze of the mid ’90s and when others moved on to Pokemon and Tamagotchis, he stuck with the Yo-Yo. Eventually ranked 4th in the world, Arron set up the British Yo-Yo Association, arranging contests and bringing competitors together from far and wide. Arron_Yoyo_nut Arron is revisiting his old passion, approaching it from a new perspective, after several years of immersion in contemporary circus. Showing that Yo-Yos can be more than something that comes out of a cracker, the piece gets down to the nitty-gritty of finger callouses and untying knots, and the fanatics whose lives have been shaped by Yo-Yo just as they have shaped the art-form; showing that a Yo-Yo is for life, not just for Christmas.
